North South University’s Central Library recently organized a series of orientation programs for the newly admitted students of the Summer 2023 semester. Aimed at introducing these fresh faces to the wealth of resources and services available, the Library Orientation Program proved to be a resounding success, leaving approximately 1,800 students equipped with essential skills for academic excellence. Held on July 18, 20, and 22, 2023, the program featured informative sessions led by esteemed library officials and ended on a high note with a library tour and light refreshments.
Led by Mr. M M Shoeb, Senior Assistant Librarian, the orientation program commenced with a comprehensive briefing on the general rules, regulations, and operating hours of the NSU Library. This introduction was a crucial foundation to ensure that the students understood the guidelines and could navigate the library efficiently.
The subsequent segment, conducted by Mr. Abdul Hakim, Assistant Librarian, demonstrated the effective use of the Library Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) for locating books and resources. Students were enlightened on the art of navigating the vast collection, enabling them to find relevant materials to support their studies effectively.
Mr. Rajiv Mahmud, Senior IT Officer, then took the stage and unveiled the world of Online Journals & eBook databases, providing students with invaluable insights into accessing scholarly articles and research materials online. Equipping the students with essential library research tools, this session was designed to enhance their academic prowess and foster a love for learning.
A highlight of the orientation program was the engaging instant quiz, where students had the chance to showcase their newfound knowledge. Quick learners who answered correctly were rewarded with copies of the book titled ‘The Unfinished Memoirs (Oshomapto Attojiboni)’ by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a revered figure in the nation’s history.
To offer students a more immersive library experience, the event concluded with an exciting library tour. Led by knowledgeable library officials, participants were introduced to various sections of the library, including the circulation desk, reference section, reading areas, and digital resource centers. This hands-on approach enabled students to feel at ease in the library environment and empowered them to make the most of its facilities.
