Dhaka, 29 January 2025 – North South University (NSU) Library hosted a special event to honor Professor Mahmud Shah Qureshi, former Director General of Bangla Academy, for his generous contribution to NSU Library from his personal collection. The event was attended by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Treasurer & Pro-Vice Chancellor (IC) Prof. Abdur Rob Khan, Dr. Mahbubur Rahman, Professor & Chair of the Department of History & Philosophy (DHP), faculty members, and administrative colleagues, recognized this invaluable addition to the library’s growing academic resources.

The program was conducted by University Librarian Dr. Md. Zahid Hossain Shoeb, who welcomed the distinguished guests and expressed gratitude for their presence. Prof. Abdur Rob Khan and Dr. Mahbubur Rahman reflected on Professor Qureshi’s remarkable life and contributions, thanking him for sharing his extensive collection with the NSU Library.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury emphasized the significance of this contribution, highlighting that many of the books are rare and not easily available in the country. He commended Professor Qureshi’s lifelong dedication to knowledge-sharing and academic enrichment, noting that his generosity will benefit generations of students and researchers.

Professor Mahmud Shah Qureshi is a distinguished scholar who has played a pivotal role in literature, academia, and cultural diplomacy. He was an ambassador for the Mujibnagar Government during the 1971 Liberation War, represented Bangladesh internationally, and served as Director General of Bangla Academy (1990–1991). He was a professor at the Institute of Bangladesh Studies at the University of Rajshahi. He has received prestigious honors, including the Ekushey Padak and France’s Légion d’honneur, for his contributions to education and culture. In his speech, Professor Qureshi expressed gratitude to NSU and the library authorities for welcoming his collection.

The event concluded with Senior Assistant Librarian (Deputy Director) Mr. M.M. Shoeb, who extended a heartfelt vote of thanks to all guests and Mr. and Mrs. Qureshi for their remarkable contribution.

Jointly organized by the Department of History & Philosophy and the NSU Central Library, this initiative strengthens NSU’s commitment to academic excellence and intellectual growth, serving as an inspiration for future contributions to knowledge.
