The North South University (NSU) Library successfully organized a hands-on workshop titled “Managing References and Citations with Mendeley” on Thursday, 19 November 2025. The session aimed to help students, faculty members, and researchers enhance their skills in managing references, organizing research materials, and generating accurate citations using Mendeley, a premium reference management tool. The NSU Library maintains an institutional subscription to Mendeley, enabling all NSU students, faculty members, and staff to access premium features by simply registering with their NSU email account.

As part of the Library’s broader efforts to strengthen research literacy and promote academic integrity, the workshop introduced participants to the concept of referencing, its importance in academic writing, and the different citation styles commonly used in scholarly work, including APA, MLA, and Harvard. The training highlighted how proper citation practices and systematic reference management help researchers avoid plagiarism while improving the quality and credibility of their academic papers.

The session was conducted by Mr. Md. Ashikuzzaman, Library Officer at NSU Library, and took place at the Library Cyber & Audio-Visual Section (E-Resources Browsing Area). A good number of pre-registered undergraduate and graduate students from various disciplines attended the event. During the workshop, participants received practical demonstrations on installing and using Mendeley for collecting, storing, and organizing research materials, as well as hands-on guidance on using the Mendeley Word Plugin to insert citations and automatically create reference lists. Mr. Ashikuzzaman demonstrated how Mendeley can capture citation data directly from web browsers, sync reference libraries, and switch citation styles according to journal or institutional requirements.

Throughout the session, participants engaged actively by creating their own Mendeley libraries and practicing citation insertion in real time. Many attendees expressed appreciation for the workshop’s practical, easy-to-follow approach and noted that the training would significantly support them in preparing well-structured and plagiarism-free academic assignments and research papers. The workshop concluded with an interactive question-and-answer segment, where students clarified various issues related to citation styles, bibliography formatting, and troubleshooting within Mendeley.

The NSU Library remains committed to organizing similar research skill development programs to support students and faculty members in their academic journey.
