The North South University Library successfully organized a workshop titled “SPSS Basics: Introduction to Data Analysis” on Thursday, 4 December 2025. Designed to strengthen students’ foundational skills in data handling and statistical analysis, the session aimed to familiarize participants with the essential features of SPSS and its practical applications in academic research. As data literacy has become an integral part of higher education, the workshop focused on helping learners understand core analytical concepts, navigate the SPSS interface, and perform basic statistical procedures confidently.

The session was conducted by Dr. Md. Zahid Hossain Shoeb, University Librarian of North South University, who led the workshop with his extensive expertise in research support and data analysis tools. During the session, Dr. Shoeb introduced participants to the SPSS environment, including the Data View Window, and demonstrated how to use SPSS syntax for efficient data management. He further guided students through key topics such as data creation, importing datasets, defining variable types, and setting up variables correctly for analysis. Participants also learned how to work with data—such as computing new variables—and were shown practical techniques for exploring datasets, including generating descriptive statistics. The workshop concluded with hands-on practice in analyzing data, covering procedures like the independent samples t-test and paired samples t-test.

Held at the Library Cyber & Audio-Visual Section (E-Resources Browsing Area), the workshop attracted a large number of undergraduate and graduate students from various disciplines. Participants engaged actively in practical exercises, step-by-step demonstrations, and interactive discussions that enhanced their understanding of SPSS functions and statistical concepts.

By organizing this workshop, the NSU Library reaffirmed its dedication to supporting students’ academic and research development. The session equipped learners with essential data analysis skills and increased their confidence in using statistical tools for coursework and research projects. The library plans to continue delivering similar training programs throughout the year to further strengthen students’ competencies in data-driven research.
